BANGARRA - TERRAIN
Bangarra Dance Theatre transport Sydney audiences to Lake Eyre with their critically acclaimed new work TERRAIN
Described by Melbourne reviewers as ‘breathtaking’, ‘mind-blowing’, ‘hypnotic’ and ‘visually stunning’, TERRAIN, the new work by Australia’s leading national Indigenous performing arts company Bangarra Dance Theatre, transports Sydney audiences to Lake Eyre when it makes its Sydney debut this Wednesday July 18 at the Opera House.
TERRAIN, by celebrated Aboriginal choreographer and Bangarra artist-in-residence Frances Rings, is a powerful fusion of contemporary dance and storytelling commissioned by Bangarra’s Artistic Director Stephen Page. Described as a hymn to country, TERRAIN explores the wonder and spiritual resonance of Kati Thanda (Lake Eyre), the place of Australia’s inland sea: one of the few untouched natural waterways in the world.
Playing in Sydney until August 18, TERRAIN unites a powerhouse team of award winning artists including composer David Page, designer Jacob Nash, lighting designer Karen Norris and costume designer Jennifer Irwin. Together with the choreographic brilliance of Frances Rings, this dynamic line-up has created a powerful and evocative landmark new work that has inspired Melbourne critics and audiences alike.
As a part of Bangarra’s Community Outreach program, 500 local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders will visit the Opera House to experience a special community performance of TERRAIN tonight, Tuesday 17 July at 8pm. This is aspecial experience for audiences as well as Bangarra. The atmosphere is always electric and joyous. Subsidised by Bangarra Dance Theatre low cost tickets for this performance are made available to local Indigenous communities.
Following its Sydney season TERRAIN will continue its national tour to Wollongong, Adelaide, Canberra and Brisbane.
Bangarra Dance Theatre is Australia’s premier national Indigenousperforming arts company. Under the brilliant and inspirational artistic direction of Stephen Page, Bangarra has strived to maintain the cultural integrity and spirit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tradition, combining it with contemporary expressions of stories, dance and music to create unique theatrical experiences, and to deliver these experiences to audiences across Australia and around the world.
