WA Ballet presents Beauty & The Beast | May 13 – 28

This May, His Majesty’s Theatre will be transformed in to a magical realm of love, sacrifice and transcending beauty when West Australian Ballet presents David Nixon’s BEAUTY & THE BEAST. An elegant and lavish production, created in 2011 for Northern Ballet, it has toured extensively across the United Kingdom to rave reviews.
This new interpretation of the beloved story adds fairies, goblins and high society socialites into the well-known tale of curses, magic mirrors and love beyond hope.
David Nixon OBE says “Beauty & the Beast is a classic fairy-tale of good versus evil, exploring the concept of beauty on the inside and the outside. This is not an adaptation of the Disney version of the story – it is based on the original tale and will embrace the darker elements of the tale as well as the lighter moments.”
Highlights include atmospheric set design by Duncan Hayler featuring dreamlike forests and castles, and a breath-takingly giant rose; richly textured costumes from Julie Anderson; and evocative lighting design from Tim Mitchell.
Accompanied by West Australia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Myron Romanul, this mesmerising ballet is set to orchestration and arrangement by John Longstaff and includes works from Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saëns, Georges Bizet, Francis Poulenc, and Alexander Glazunov.
EDUCATION SESSION: West Australian Ballet will be presenting a special matinee performance of Beauty & the Beast for primary and secondary schools, education support centres, home schools, and dance schools. Contact for more information.
