Future Makers

Audition for Sydney’s New Youth Dance Company Future Makers

Seeking Dancers Aged 15 – 24 to Audition on July 27

Launching this July, Future Makers is Dance Makers Collective’s Youth Dance Company for creative young dance artists aged 15-24 years.

Dance Makers Collective is Western Sydney’s professional dance company. Established in 2012, the company is made up of nine professional dance makers who have worked for major dance and theatre companies from around Australia, touring major productions internationally. Together, Dance Makers Collective create exciting contemporary dance works with “imagination, thoughtfulness and even a sense of humour” (Jill Sykes, Sydney Morning Herald) and their most recent production DADS was shortlisted for Outstanding Achievement in Independent Dance at the Australian Dance Awards.

Future Makers provides a platform for aspiring young dancers and choreographers to work with professional artists in an inclusive and challenging environment. The program gives selected participants the opportunity to work with the artists in Dance Makers Collective in the creation of new work, and to learn from other professional dance artists.

For the inaugural program, members of Future Makers will work towards a large-scale performance with Dance Makers Collective, performing in their next main-stage professional production, and will work with Helpmann Award-winning dance artist Richard Cilli (Sydney Dance Company, Chunky Move).

“I can’t tell you how excited I am about this program,” said DMC member Carl Sciberras. “When I was a young dancer I wished I’d had this opportunity, I was envious of youth companies like QL2 in Canberra and Steps in Perth, there’s such a rich history of incredible youth dance in Australia and we hope to be able to contribute to that here in Sydney. And the inaugural performance opportunity is seriously going to blow the socks off these young dance makers of the future!”

Future Makers is designed for enthusiastic young dance artists with diverse skills, if you are a great performer, a clever creative, a good team player or any combination we encourage you to apply. The program does not discriminate against style or training; if you have a willingness and aptitude for dance of any kind there is a place for you!

The program is delivered in partnership with the Australian College of Physical Education, where rehearsals will be held on Thursday nights.

To participate, young dancers must attend an audition on Saturday 27 July from 11am until 4pm, where they will be run through a basic technique class, improvisation and composition tasks.

Places in the program are limited, to register for an audition visit Dance Makers Collective’s website.
