Dancers, Composers and Musicians Collaborate for EDC
Bold new contemporary dance works from 4 of the hottest young choreographers
Expressions Dance Company (EDC) partners with the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (QCGU) to present Converge, a major contemporary dance season featuring cutting-edge collaborations between Australasia’s most exciting choreographers and emerging composers and musicians.
Converge continues EDC’s long tradition of original collaborations between live musicians, composers and dance makers. Converge brings audiences provocative new choreographic works from Beijing Dance LDTX’s Xu Yiming, EDC ensemble members Richard Causer and Jake McLarnon, and acclaimed contemporary dance maker Stephanie Lake.
Bold and inspiring, Converge showcases the latest in daring contemporary dance and new composition – a must for dance and music lovers alike.

About the Choreographers
Stephanie Lake is one of Australia’s most exciting contemporary choreographers. Her thought-provoking and visceral works have been recognised through Helpmann, Green Room and Australian Dance Awards. In 2017 Stephanie received a prestigious Australia Council Fellowship. She collaborates across theatre, film and TV, visual art and music video and has directed several large-scale public works involving over 1000 participants.
Xu Yiming is a founding member of Beijing Dance/LDTX. He trained with the Beijing Runliang Dance School and joined the Guangzhou Song and Dance Company and the Beijing Modern Dance Company in 2001. He has created major works for Ballet Chemnitz (Germany), Beijing Dance and Expressions Dance Company. Xu Yiming joins Converge as part of EDC’s groundbreaking Chinese Australian Dance Exchange Program.
Richard Causer joined EDC in 2006. He earned nominations for Most Outstanding Male Dancer for both the 2011 Australian Dance Awards (ADA) and Helpmann Awards, and again in 2012 he was nominated for an ADA for performing his self choreographed work Wilhelm Scream. He was most recently nominated for a 2017 ADA for Most Outstanding Male Dancer in Black (2016). His choreographic credits include works for the Malaysian Dance Festival, Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts, Expressions Dance Company, QUT, Third Row Dance Company (UK), Centre of Advanced Training (UK), Inky Cloak Theatre Company (UK), and Raw Moves Dance Company (Singapore).
Jake McLarnon first performed with EDC as a guest artist for the 2016 remount of When Time Stops. Jake became a company member later that year to join EDC’s 2016 China tour and has since performed in EDC productions Propel, Natalie Weir’s Behind Closed Doors and Mozart Airborne (with OperaQ). He also recently danced in a collaborative projection piece titled Exchange(s) with artist Matt Sheridan and TWFine art for the 2017 Teneriffe Festival. Jake will make his EDC choreographic debut in Converge, with a thought-provoking piece inspired by the work of Australian artist Jasper Hills.
