Australia’s dancing elite will be joined by a flock of international talent and the country’s most devoted dance enthusiasts at Melbourne Arena this December for the Australian DanceSport calendar event of the year – the 73rd Australian DanceSport Championship.

The glamourous annual event will see over 1,000 competitive ballroom athletes take to the stage at Melbourne Arena from Friday 7 until Sunday 9 December with more sequins, poise and glamour then ever before.

Held by the Australian Dancing Society, and run under the governing rules of DanceSport Australia , the Championship is not only the premier DanceSport event in Australia, but remains one of the key events on the international circuit and within the Oceanic region. Australian athletes have the opportunity to compete against some of the world’s best on home soil, and audiences can witness the skill, glamour and athleticism of World Class DanceSport.

The Championship allows participants of all levels and all ages to compete in Ballroom (Standard), Latin American and New Vogue dance styles. From those who are just starting out on their newly acquired DanceSport journey through to seasoned professional competitors, there is a division to cater for all abilities. The major events will decide Australia’s representatives for all World Championships in 2019.

Australian Dancing Society Managing Director, Adam Blakey explains that in many ways, DanceSport is one of the most complex competitive sports in the country but is changing, embracing participants of all abilities.

“DanceSport is a confluence of so many disciplines – the ultimate test of physical strength, agility, coordination, stamina, discipline, teamwork, grace, style and musical interpretations. However as an industry we are welcoming dancers of all abilities as we strive to make DanceSport a more inclusive,” said Adam Blakey.

This year’s Championship will host the inaugural Australian Para Dance Competition welcoming four incredible West Australian athletes alongside their teachers, to compete in the Waltz, Carousel and Rumba. World Latin Para Dance Champions and Pilipinas Got Talent runners-up, Julius Obero and Rhea Marqez , will also treat visitors to an astounding floor show on the second and third day of the Championship.

Internationally celebrated German dance superstars Pavel Zvychaynyy & Oxana Lebedew will travel to Australia for exclusive performances on the second and third day of the Championship. The pair are currently ranked sixth in the world in the Professional Latin category and will stun crowds and competitors with their immaculate demonstrations of Latin styles.

Professional, Adult and Junior couples alongside individual and teacher student pairings will compete and perform in various categories over three days to take out the 2018 Australian titles and represent the country at all World Championships in 2019. Categories include Professional Standard, Latin & New Vogue; Adult Standard, Latin, New Vogue & 10 Dance; Under 21 Standard, Latin & New Vogue; and Junior & Juvenile Standard, Latin & New Vogue.

Day 1 of the Championship will feature the Australian Para DanceSport display and younger competitors competing in styles such as the Waltz and Cha Cha. The family-friendly day also celebrates recreational dancers of all age groups competing in a variety of different styles, and features Professional & Amateur couple and Teacher Student events. Competitors in the Adult division will compete in the Ten Dance Event: a combination of the five Standard dances and the five Latin dances where the winner will receive the right to represent Australia at the World Championship in 2019.

Day 2 of the Championship will be headlined by the Professional Standard, WDSF (World DanceSport Federation) Standard and the Australian Closed Latin Titles alongside an abundance of World Selection Events giving competitors the chance to qualify for the World Championship in 2019. Open Juniors and Juveniles will also compete for the title of Australian DanceSport Champion in Standard, Latin and New Vogue styles.

International special guests will be Oxana Lebedew & Pavel Zvychaynyy

Day 3 – the final day – of the Championship will host the Professional Latin Australian Title, the Australian Closed Standard Title and the WDSF open Latin Title. These events will also choose Australia’s World Championship representatives.

Pavel & Oxana will return to the stage for a final demonstration of Latin styles which will draw the 73rd Australian DanceSport Championship to a close.
