Melbourne audiences are in for a thrilling operatic event this November as Opera Australia presents its new production of Carmen at the Regent Theatre from 15–25 November. Marking a triumphant homecoming, soprano Danielle de Niese, acclaimed as ‘opera’s coolest soprano’, takes on the iconic role of Carmen in a production that explores power, gender, violence, and class through a contemporary lens.
Directed by Anne-Louise Sarks, Artistic Director of Melbourne Theatre Company, this is her first fully staged opera. Sarks collaborates with Tony Award-winning designer Marg Horwell to create a maximalist set and costumes that bring Carmen’s fiery world vividly to life. Sharing the titular role is OA principal mezzo Sian Sharp, whose previous performances have cemented her mastery of this complex character.
Abraham Bretón makes his Melbourne debut as Don José, alongside Diego Torre, with a stellar supporting cast including Luke Gabbedy, Jennifer Black, and Angela Hogan. Conductor Clelia Cafiero leads Orchestra Victoria, guiding Bizet’s score with dynamic energy and nuance. From the seductive Habanera to the exhilarating Toreador Song, this production promises passion, drama, and unforgettable music.
