Bangarra Dance Theatre and The Australian Ballet reunite for their fourth creative partnership, presenting Flora — a powerful new full-length work celebrating resilience, kinship, and the deep-rooted connection between Country and culture. This landmark production invites audiences on an evocative journey through the evolution of Australian flora, weaving movement, music, design, and cultural truth-telling into a transformative dance experience.
Choreographed by Mirning woman Frances Rings, Bangarra’s Artistic Director and Co-CEO, Flora brings together exceptional creative voices to honour the living history embedded in the natural world. Rings’ distinct choreographic language — grounded, intricate, and rich with cultural resonance — draws audiences closer to the ancestral stories layered within Australia’s diverse plant life.
The work features an original composition by internationally acclaimed Kalkadungu composer William Barton, whose powerful musical landscapes elevate the production with depth and emotional intensity. Visual storytelling is further heightened through dynamic costume design by Meriam Samsep woman Grace Lillian Lee, evocative set design by Elizabeth Gadsby, atmospheric lighting by Karen Norris, and Cultural Consultancy from Matthew Doyle, a descendant of the Muruwari Aboriginal nation.
Together, these leading creatives craft an immersive world where movement and meaning intertwine, reminding audiences of the vital relationship between humanity and the environment.
Flora marks the first full-length collaboration between Bangarra Dance Theatre and The Australian Ballet — a rare union of two of Australia’s most influential performing arts companies. Audiences are invited to witness this profound convergence of classical technique, contemporary Indigenous storytelling, and multidisciplinary artistry.
