INDance

Sydney Dance Company and The Neilson Foundation

Over two weekends in August, Sydney Dance Company and the Neilson Foundation will be supporting INDance, an independent dance program held in the Neilson Studio at Sydney Dance Company.

INDance provides a platform for independent choreographers and creatives to present their work, with the aim of building capacity, improving access and participation across the sector while reflecting the rich diversity of choreographic voices in contemporary Australia.

This short season of dance works were chosen through an expression of interest process and reviewed by an external panel of industry advisors led by Rafael Bonachela. Applicants were assessed on their works, their suitability for the program and the performance space, and whether INDance could provide an appropriate platform to showcase their work.

Four incredible artists have been chosen for the 2023 INDance program – Rachel Arianne Ogle, Kimberley Parkin, Ryuichi Fujimura and Jasmin Sheppard.

Sydney Dance Company is thrilled to be able to provide production, technical, publicity and marketing support for the artists involved and acknowledge the Neilson Foundation’s visionary investment in this program over the next three years to enable the growth and development of Australian dancemakers.

After a sell-out inaugural season of INDance in 2022, Sydney Dance Company is delighted to invite audiences back to the Neilson Studio at the Wharf for this curated program which will explore diverse and innovative choreographic concepts that push the boundaries of dance and reflect the current Australian contemporary dance landscape.

Sydney Dance Company’s Artistic Director, Rafael Bonachela said; “I am so excited to be launching the 2023 season of INDance at Sydney Dance Company, generously supported by the Neilson Foundation. It is thrilling to be able to bring four diverse, independent contemporary dance works to Sydney audiences in the Neilson Studio, at Sydney Dance Company’s Wharf Studios. Supporting Australian choreographers and creatives is at the heart of Sydney Dance Company’s mission, and it is amazing to see INDance return for its second season.”

Neilson Foundation Trustee, Paris Neilson, said; “The Neilson Foundation is thrilled to be involved with this incubator for talent. We recognise that performance opportunities like these are vital to ensure that independent dancemakers can have their work seen by new audiences, as well as future funders and presenters. The intimacy of the Neilson Studio at Sydney Dance Company adds to the experience of watching diverse, experimental dance, and we are proud to partner with Sydney Dance Company for three years to establish this important platform.”

“INDance is a new Sydney Dance Company initiative, one in which it shares space and resources with independent dance artists. It’s good for everyone. The SDC audience is encouraged to dip toes into work that might otherwise not be on the radar and the country’s biggest contemporary dance company gives its backing and imprimatur to artists who don’t have the kind of bounty available to our high-profile performing arts organisations.”  Deborah Jones on INDance 2022

WEEK 1

Thursday 17 – Saturday 19 August

Precipice by Rachel Arianne Ogle – 6.30pm
