Opera Australia marks a century since the premiere of Puccini’s final opera, Turandot, with a spectacular new production opening at the Sydney Opera House on 15 January 2026. Directed and choreographed by the internationally acclaimed Ann Yee, this production brings a fresh perspective to the timeless story of love, power, and transformation.
Produced in collaboration with Sydney Festival, this Turandot promises monumental sets, immersive visuals, and enthralling choreography. Audiences will be captivated by the opera’s iconic arias, including the world-renowned Nessun dorma, made famous by Pavarotti’s legendary performance at the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
Ann Yee, making her Australian directorial debut, brings contemporary influences to Puccini’s century-old story. She is joined by award-winning set designer Elizabeth Gadsby, costume designer David Fleischer, lighting designer Paul Jackson, and video designer Andrew Thomas Huang, whose Grammy-nominated work spans film, sculpture, and music videos.
The title role of Turandot will be performed by sopranos Rebecca Nash and Anna-Louise Cole, joined by South Korean tenor Young Woo Kim as Calaf, alongside Diego Torre and Rosario La Spina sharing the role. The Opera Australia Chorus, Children’s Chorus, and ensemble dancers will complement the performance, while the Opera Australia Orchestra, led by Henrik Nánási, Nicholas Milton, Andrea Battistoni, and Tahu Matheson, brings Puccini’s sweeping score to life, including 13 tuned Chinese gongs and on-stage percussion.
Turandot tells the story of a fierce princess who challenges suitors with three riddles — failure means death. This production explores Turandot’s ancestry, her personal journey, and the transformative power of love. Though Puccini never completed the opera, it remains one of his most celebrated works and a cornerstone of the operatic repertoire.
This new production is a must-see for audiences seeking a blend of classical mastery, contemporary innovation, and the emotional intensity of Puccini’s music. Experience Turandot at the Sydney Opera House and witness a centennial celebration brought vividly to life.
