One of the world’s most iconic pieces of music will be brought to life this August, when Queensland Ballet presents Peter and the Wolf at the Thomas Dixon Centre.
Beloved by children for generations, Peter and the Wolf is certain to delight families of all ages. The tale of an adventurous young boy, a grumpy grandfather, a sly wolf, daft duck, and cunning cat have captured the imaginations of youngsters since its Russian premiere in 1936.
Composed as an introduction to the orchestra for children, the lively production fits perfectly with Queensland Ballet’s ‘My First Ballet series’, set to inspire the littlest lovers of ballet.
Queensland Ballet Artistic Director Li Cunxin AO says Peter and the Wolf is the perfect introduction to theatre for children.
“Whether they love music, dance, costumes, or the narrative. This season is certain to have kids on the edge of their seats,” explained Mr Li.
Mr Li says fourth time is a charm, after the season was postponed in both 2020 and 2021, due to COVID-19, and in 2022 due to delay of the opening of the Thomas Dixon Centre.
“We are looking forward to finally bringing Greg Horsman’s retelling of Peter and the Wolf to the stage, and we thank the audience for their continued patience over the last few years,” said Mr Li.
“Even though it’s not in the school holidays we have ensured that it’s still in a good time slot for our young audiences,” added Mr Li.
When Russian-born composer Sergei Prokofiev composed the score and narration of Peter and the Wolf in 1936, it was with the musical education of young listeners in mind.
“Throughout this imaginative retelling, each musical instrument represents a character: Peter is represented by the string family, the delicate bluebird follows the notes of the flute, while the stealthy wolf is portrayed by the French horns. Loveable Grandpa moves steadily to the sound of the bassoon,” said Mr Li.
With colourful costumes, loveable creatures, and plenty of charm, Queensland Ballet choreographer and Chief Ballet Master, Greg Horsman gives this much-loved story a contemporary twist.
“All of the classic, beloved elements will be there, but there’ll be more narration to accompany the extra story elements I’ve added, which includes a cub scout adventure with Peter and his grandfather to the zoo,” Mr Horsman said.
“Brought to life by Queensland Ballet’s Pre-Professional Program along with live music, this truly is a production for the young at heart,” added Mr Horsman.
