Manon

28 September – 8 October 2022

One of Kenneth MacMillan’s most iconic works is set to come to QPAC when Queensland Ballet presents Manon from 28 September – 8 October 2022.

A tale of seduction, ambition, and greed, Manon is a quintessential romantic tragedy, following the tale of a young French peasant girl conflicted by love and yearning to be free from poverty.

Audiences will be taken from decadent 18th century Paris to sultry New Orleans in a performance not to be missed, as Artistic Director Li Cunxin AO and his wife and former ballerina Mary Li return to the stage for select performances of Manon.

“This year I celebrate a decade of directorship with Queensland Ballet. There is no better way to celebrate such a milestone than on-stage alongside my wife and Queensland Ballet Mistress, Mary Li,” said Mr Li.

“It is an honour to be performing one of Kenneth MacMillan’s blockbuster masterpieces” he added.

Regarded as one of the leading choreographers of his generation, the late Kenneth Macmillan is renowned for creating masterpieces such as Romeo and Juliet, Elite Syncopations and Manon.

“Queensland Ballet is one of only a handful of ballet companies across the world with permission to perform Kenneth MacMillan’s version of Manon,” explained Mr Li.

Along with Li and Mary’s return, Queensland Ballet will be welcoming one of the world’s best ballerinas, Alina Cojocaru, who will be joining the company on stage for two select performances.

“We are thrilled to announce that Alina Cojocaru, one of the world’s greatest ballerinas, is to return to Queensland Ballet for our upcoming season of Manon.

“It is truly special to work with Alina, not only for our Australian audiences but also to inspire our dancers as they closely rehearse and perform with her,” concluded Mr Li.

From seduction, ambition, and greed to the persuasive power of love, the sumptuous tale of Manon has been captivating audiences for more than two centuries. And it’s an adult-only affair, with Queensland Ballet advising this is not a performance suitable for younger audiences.

Queensland Ballet presents Manon at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC, from 28 September – 8 October 2022. To book tickets click here.
