The Nutcracker

Queensland Ballet

Queensland Ballet has been bringing festive magic to Brisbane audiences for a decade, with the whimsical Christmas tale of The Nutcracker an annual tradition for families of all ages.

Audiences young and old will be whisked away from the heat in Brisbane to a land of lavish Christmas parties, whimsical snowy backdrops and enchanting adventures. Families have been returning every year for the festive tradition since Queensland Ballet first presented The Nutcracker in 2013.

Artistic Director Li Cunxin AO said he’s glad he pushed ahead with his vision to establish The Nutcracker as an annual tradition.

“When I first proposed establishing The Nutcracker as an annual tradition, I think the Queensland Ballet board thought I was a bit mad. But I’d seen how well it worked overseas, so I convinced them to try it. I’m delighted that audiences have adopted this work into their Christmas plans every year,” Mr Li said.

He said it’s the perfect gift to be shared by the whole family at Christmas time.

“There’s no better way to get into the festive spirit than with an experience that families can share together,” he said.

“We’ve been sharing the magic of the season with Brisbane audiences for 10 years now and it is very special for Queensland Ballet to be part of so many family traditions,” Mr Li concluded.

Adapted by renowned choreographer Ben Stevenson OBE from the original 19th-century Russian classic and featuring the original Tchaikovsky score by Queensland Symphony Orchestra, The Nutcracker is a feast for the senses, with luminous sets, costumes and music certain to delight audiences.

The Nutcracker runs from 2 – 23 December at the Playhouse Theatre, QPAC. Click here to book tickets.
