Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Australia and Sydney Choreographic Centre

Choreographing a Future Together

The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Australia and Sydney Choreographic Centre have today announced a new partnership which will see the two organisations work to nurture the artistic voice of young Australian dancers.

Through a range of initiatives RAD Australia and Sydney Choreographic Centre under the leadership of Artistic Director Francesco Ventriglia, will inspire, educate and provide opportunities for dancers to explore the skills required for choreography whilst experiencing life behind the scenes of a professional dance company.

RAD Australia National Director Rebecca Taylor said:

“The Sydney Choreographic Centre is a collaborative and inclusive space for dancers to learn and experiment with their creative voice. We applaud their commitment to developing a new generation of choreographers and artists, introducing them to renowned international Choreographers, professional dancers, and other skilled professionals, and providing a range of development programs designed to equip dancers to create.

This partnership is a wonderful opportunity for RAD Members and students to be introduced to this community of artists. Together we are looking at a range of initiatives to support the development of choreographic skills and to help our dancers recognise their own desire to create and grow. This partnership will affect the future of dance in Australia, starting from our grassroots.”

With RAD Australia currently in the midst of its own Composition to Choreographic initiative MadeBy, there is a heightened focus on developing choreographic skills in RAD dancers. One of the many ways the two organisations will come to work together is for Sydney Choreographic Centre to play host to the winning composer and choreographer from MadeBy and give them space develop their brand new work in SCC’s inner-city suburban Sydney studios in Alexandria during Stage 3 of the initiative.

Sydney Choreographic Centre ArtisticDirector Francesco Ventriglia will also be the Commissioned Choreographer for RAD Australia’s 2022 Isobel Anderson Awards in New South Wales

Francesco said: “I am delighted for Sydney Choreographic Centre to partner with the Royal Academy of Dance to deliver programs that develop, excite and inspire the dancers and choreographers of Australia.

I have personally had a long relationship with the Royal Academy, and I know that this collaboration will provide an amazing opportunity for us, together, to nurture the next
generation of artists to develop their own strong, individual artistic voices.”

Sydney Choreographic Centre are currently inviting applications for their Master Program for Choreographers, and auditions for a Mentorship for Dancers Program which over 16 weeks, will give dancers 17+, an opportunity to develop and hone skills within a company environment, working with and learning from acclaimed choreographers, mentors, and from Francesco Ventriglia. The program includes daily class, workshops, masterclasses, and mentoring from international artists. It will give dancers an opportunity to work alongside Francesco Ventriglia on the development of several new creations to be performed during 2022. Find out more here.
