A CHORUS LINE - SYDNEY 2
A CHORUS LINE would have to be one of my all-time favourite musicals and Tim Lawson’s Sydney production is a sensational tribute to one of the longest running shows on Broadway.
Conceptualized by Michael Bennett with its first production off-Broadway  in 1975, A CHORUS LINE has since won 9 Tony Awards and ran on Broadway for fifteen years straight with 6,137 performances at the Shubert Theatre. When it closed in 1990, A Chorus Line was the longest running show in Broadway history until its record was surpassed by Cats in 1997 and Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera in 2002. The show has enjoyed many worldwide productions, both amateur and professional since 1975.
Joshua Horner, star of Dirty Dancing, Billy Elliot and judge on Dancing with the Stars, leads an exceptional cast who portray the age-loved story of 17 dancers auditioning for their chance to dance in the chorus of an upcoming Broadway musical. Horner plays ‘Zach’, the formidable director who, with his assistant ‘Larry’ put the desperate-for-work dancers through their paces to find just 4 girls and 4 boys for the production.  Instead of just the usual audition process, Zach wants to learn more about the dancers and asks them for personal insight into their past and how they came to dance. The audience is transported through the hilarity, touching and crazy lives of the auditioning dancers who reveal their motivations through much-loved songs such as ‘I Hope I Get It’, ‘I Can Do That’, ‘At The Ballet’, ‘Dance Ten, Looks Three’ and many more. Zach’s former flame, Cassie pleads with him for a chance to dance in the chorus with ‘The Music and the Mirror’ – a pivotal point in understanding Zach’s character in the production.
The production is seamless like a well-oiled machine and the cast are all perfectly suited to their roles with exceptional dance and vocal skills.  Choreography is era-appropriate with a few updated tweaks for today’s audience and the set design, while very simple, is classically effective with rotating mirrors to highlight rehearsal and self-reflection scenes.  The final rendition of ‘One’ played to thunderous applause as the entire cast including Horner, took to the stage in dazzling costumes to perform signature choreography embedded in the minds of all A Chorus Line buffs the world over.
