Sydney Dance Company’s celebrated New Breed program returns to Carriageworks for its twelfth and final season, presenting four world premieres and marking over a decade of pioneering opportunities for Australia’s emerging choreographers. Since its inception through the vision of Neil Balnaves AO and Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela, New Breed has been a vital platform for independent dance voices, showcasing bold, original works that shape the future of contemporary dance.

This final season, running from 3–13 December 2025 at Carriageworks, 245 Wilson St, Eveleigh, Sydney, features the innovative new works of Emma Fishwick, Ngaere Jenkins, Harrison Ritchie-Jones, and Ryan Pearson, performed by Sydney Dance Company dancers. Each choreographer brings a unique perspective: Emma Fishwick’s marathon, o marathon explores endurance and hope in times of exhaustion; Ngaere Jenkins’ From the horizon thereafter evokes the beauty and memory of her Aotearoa/New Zealand homeland; Harrison Ritchie-Jones’ Pigeon Humongous imagines a post-apocalyptic world where movement is salvation; and Ryan Pearson’s Save Point blends childhood nostalgia with inventive physical storytelling inspired by video games.

Sydney Dance Company’s Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela reflects: “New Breed has been an anchor of our vision to nurture emerging choreographers. While 2025 marks the final season, it is not an ending but an interval. We remain committed to supporting independent practice.”

Carriageworks CEO Fergus Linehan highlights New Breed’s enduring impact on the Australian dance landscape, while Victoria Balnaves celebrates the 12-year partnership that has launched 47 choreographers and 49 new Australian works. This final season promises a powerful celebration of creativity, innovation, and the future of contemporary dance in Australia.
