The rehearsal room came alive this week as Rob Mills, Casey Donovan and Paulini reunited under the musical direction of John Foreman to bring The Idols of Musical Theatre to life. Their first session together delivered a surge of energy, harmony and unmistakable star power — offering a tantalising preview of what audiences can expect when the show premieres at Melbourne Recital Centre on 27 and 28 December.
Working through an uplifting rendition of “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from & Juliet, the trio — each an Australian Idol favourite turned acclaimed musical theatre performer — locked into silky harmonies as Foreman shaped arrangements with his signature finesse. Chemistry sparked instantly, creating a rehearsal atmosphere filled with warmth, nostalgia and pure musical joy.

A New Holiday Tradition for Melbourne
Presented as part of the Australian Pops Orchestra’s Holiday Concerts, The Idols of Musical Theatre celebrates three beloved Australian voices performing songs they’ve championed on stage, alongside dream roles they’re ready to explore. Backed by a sweeping 40-piece orchestra, the concert promises powerhouse vocals, Broadway favourites and a feel-good celebration for the summer season.
Rob Mills said the reunion brings heartfelt joy:
“The ultimate Idol reunion but with better lighting and no eliminations! Sharing the stage with Casey, Paulini, John and the Australian Pops Orchestra is epic. John’s been there from the very beginning and always makes the music shine.”
Casey Donovan echoed the sentiment:
“Performing musical theatre hits we’ve each lived with over the years is such a thrill. Getting on that stage together — and feeling the audience respond — will make it even more special.”
Paulini added:
“Working with a 40-piece orchestra is breathtaking. The sound wraps around you and fills the room with emotion. And collaborating with John always brings heart — that’s why we love performing with him.”
Audiences can expect music from Chicago, Wicked, The Bodyguard, Grease, Rent, & Juliet, 9 to 5 The Musical and more — a curated journey through the roles that have shaped each artist’s career.
If rehearsal room magic is any indication, this new holiday tradition is set to deliver an unforgettable end to 2025.
