Hong Kong Dance Co presents
‘The Legend of Mulan’

In a first for the performing arts in Australia, Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDC) will bring its bold and original interpretation of The Legend of Mulan to Sydney in September.
The Legend of Mulan, based on a medieval Chinese poem (known to many through the 1998 animated Disney film Mulan), is a story of heroism and honour. It tells the tale of Mulan, a young peasant girl, who learns martial arts and bravely disguises herself as a man to take the place of her elderly father in battle.
HKDC’s artistic director & choreographer, Yang Yuntao, has brought his own innovative and energetic style to this production combining contemporary and traditional Chinese dance.

Presented in New York, Hong Kong and now Sydney, The Legend Of Mulan has also received critical acclaim, winning the Outstanding Production and Outstanding Ensemble Performance categories at the 2014 Hong Kong Dance Awards. Expect an enthralling contemporary performance that has delighted audiences worldwide.
Visiting Sydney in April are Mulan's creators (L-R):Eddy Zee, Programme manager; Yeung Tsz-yan, lighting designer; Yuen Hon-wai, Set Designer; Yang Yuntao, Artistic Director & Choreographer; David Tsui, Executive Director; and Alex Wong, Production Manager.

Yang Yuntao has brought his own innovative and energetic style to this production combining contemporary and traditional Chinese dance to produce “thrilling battle scenes balanced by a touching portrayal of Mulan’s relationship with her father.” Amongst the innovative ingredients that Yang employs are parkour and acrobatics that are sure to entertain adults and children alike.
In April,  the artistic minds behind this amazing production visited Sydney to promote the upcoming tour as well as Hong Kong’s vibrant performance culture including Eddy Zee, program manager, Yeung Tsz-yan, lighting designer, Yuen Hon-wei, set deigner, and Karin Chiu, costumes.
This tour is sponsored by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office Sydney, which aims to strengthen economic ties with Australia and New Zealand and promote Hong Kong’s interests in the region. The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has financially supported Hong Kong Dance Company since their incorporation in 2001 as a charitable and non-profit-making institution.
