Victorian Opera is set to make waves this summer with Gilbert & Sullivan’s uproarious operetta The Pirates of Penzance, performing at the Palais Theatre from 31 January to 6 February 2026. This swashbuckling crowd-pleaser promises laughter, music, and theatrical spectacle for audiences of all ages.
Leading the high-seas hijinks are Ben Mingay and Antoinette Halloran as the Pirate King and the long-suffering Ruth, following their acclaimed performances in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. They are joined by a stellar ensemble including theatre veteran Richard Piper as the Major General, rising stars Nicholas Jones and Nina Korbe as Frederic and Mabel, and Christopher Hillier as the Sergeant of Police.
The cast also features a new generation of talent, including 2026 Opera Prize winners Rachael Joyce, Bailey Montgomerie, and Alessia Pintabona, alongside past recipients Douglas Kelly and Syrah Torii. Their combined energy ensures a performance that blends professionalism with fresh vibrancy.
Directed by Stuart Maunder AM and conducted by James Pratt, this production honours the enduring charm of Gilbert & Sullivan. Maunder comments, “There is no theatrical phenomenon with more staying power than Gilbert & Sullivan productions. For generations of Australians, their first G&S experience in a theatre is iconic.”
With classics such as I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General, Poor Wandering One, and I am the Pirate King, this production offers joy, comedy, and music that has captivated audiences for over a century. Perfect for families and musical theatre lovers alike, The Pirates of Penzance is a celebratory highlight of Victorian Opera’s 21st anniversary season.
