Award Winning Dark Musical is Touring

Sydney, Canberra, Gold Coast & Wollongong

Sexy, dark and disturbing, American Psycho – The Musical is touring this year starting at the Sydney Opera House in June and then moving onto Wollongong, Canberra and the Gold Coast.

The production premiered in 2019 at Hayes Theatre in Sydney where it received rave reviews and went on to win 9 Sydney Theatre Awards in 2020 including Best Independent Musical, Best Direction of a Musical and Best Choreography of a Musical (Yvette Lee).

American Psycho – The Musical will be presented in the Sydney Opera House’s Playhouse from 3 – 27 June, 2021. It will then play at Wollongong, Canberra and the Gold Coast through June and July.

Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 controversial best-selling novel, American Psycho, and the 2000 film of the same name, American Psycho – The Musical is a chilling, yet wickedly comedic insight into a society driven by capitalism, self-image and wealth.

Power. Privilege. Psychopathy. Meet Patrick Bateman, the man with it all; the Wall Street job, the raging ego and, of course, the secret serial murders. Step into his office as this pitch black comedy enters the deranged world of an original psycho killer.

Starring Ben Gerrard, the pitch black, social satire tells the story of Patrick Bateman, a young and handsome member of Manhattan’s elite who indulges in sadistic sex and murder. With the book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Riverdale), music and lyrics by Tony Award-winner Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening) and featuring classic ‘80s hits from Phil Collins, Tears for Fears, New Order and Huey Lewis and the News, American Psycho – The Musical is both cult-classic and crime thriller.

Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Performance, Ebony Bott, says: “As the insatiable appetite for crime content remains a fixture of our cultural zeitgeist, American Psycho – The Musical is perfect for audiences looking to be thrilled. Reimagined through the discerning lens of Alexander Berlage, this dark comedy speaks of power, privilege, narcissism and greed, and encourages us to reflect on whether this darkness exists both within ourselves and the world around us”.

American Psycho – The Musical boasts an impressive Australian creative team comprising Director Alexander Berlage (Cry Baby), Musical Director Andrew Worboys (RENT, Sweet Charity, Assassins), Choreographer Yvette Lee (Moonshadow), recipient of multiple Sydney Theatre Awards for Best Set Design Isabel Hudson (Cry Baby), Costume Designer Mason Browne (Cry Baby), and Sound Designer Nicholas Walker (Assassins, Blood Brothers). This musical is produced by BB-Arts Entertainment & Two Doors Productions and presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

It’s time to revel in your dark side with American Psycho: The Musical.
