Off the back of the announcement earlier in the week of the newly formed Brent Street Artistic Council comes more exciting news for Brent Street with the announcement of Cameron Mitchell as the new Artistic Director.
Cameron is currently one of Australia’s most respected and versatile choreographers having choreographed for Sony Music, Warner Music and Festival Records, most recently with artists such as Natalie Bassingthwaite, Kelly Rowland and David Guetta. Recently his work has helped young hopefuls in the Logie award winning So You Think You Can Dance as well as being the cornerstone of numerous television commercials. Cameron’s choreography has been a feature in award winning shows such as Hi-5, Home and Away, Popstars, Pop Princess 2.
As a performer, Cameron appeared in the Australian productions of West Side Story, Hot Show Shuffle, Chicago, Oliver and My Fair Lady to name a few. He recently performed in Monty Python’s Spamalot and is credited with many TV appearances including Baz Luhrman’s Moulin Rouge.
As a teacher at Brent Street for the past 17 years, with the last two as Artistic Advisor for the full time course, the passion for the Brent Street students and their success is in Cameron’s blood.
“After 17 years at Brent Street, I am so proud that the Artistic Council has chosen me to lead the Brent Street Artistic team. With endorsement from these amazing professionals, I can’t wait to work with the Brent Street team to lift Brent Street to new artistic heights.”
Just last week Brent Street announced an impressive line up in its newly formed Artistic Council. As Head of the Artistic Council, Caroline O’Connor has been joined by Steven Heathcote, Wayne Harrison and Kellie Dickerson. Their first responsibility was to select the new Artistic Director of which they have wasted no time.
The position attracted an extremely high calibre of applicant and the Artistic Council felt that it was Cameron’s passion coupled with his teaching experience and award winning choreography that made him the frontrunner for the role. The fact that he has been involved with Brent Street for some time was an added bonus.
Working closely with the Artistic Council, the Artistic Director is responsible for ensuring Brent Street meets the highest international standards of production, choreography and technique all with the aim of providing the best possible artistic experience and industry opportunities to Brent Street students.
According to Brent Street General Manager, Suzy Yates, “The appointment of Cameron Mitchell as Artistic Director is another positive step forward for the students at Brent Street. With the Artistic Team now in place, we will now be focusing on pushing the boundaries and evolving the studios in many areas including syllabus, public performances, career opportunities and of course, artistic direction. There is so much energy among the staff and students at Brent Street that is truly inspiring”
