The Legacy
Based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, CATS first opened at London’s New London Theatre in 1981, where it ran for a record-breaking 21 years and almost 9,000 performances, winning both the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical.
Since then, it has been staged in over 50 countries, translated into 23 languages, and seen by more than 81 million people worldwide. On Broadway, CATS ran for 18 years and won seven Tony Awards including Best Musical.
The show tells the story of the Jellicle cats, who gather once a year at the Jellicle Ball where their leader, Old Deuteronomy, makes the Jellicle Choice and decides which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn.
The timeless score features Memory—one of the most recorded songs in musical theatre history—covered by over 150 artists including Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Nicole Scherzinger, Johnny Mathis, Liberace and Barry Manilow.
