DANCING INTO THE 3RD DIMENSIONBy Joel Peisley
STREETDANCE 3D – the world’s first dance film in 3D – opens in Australian cinemas on May 27. Set on the streets of London, it features the debut film appearances of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ hip hop champions – Flawless, Diversity & George Sampson. While the technology used within the film is fresh, sadly the same can’t be said for the storyline – it’s a variation on the ballet-collides-with-hip-hop storyline that we’ve seen so many times before, in films like ‘Save The Last Dance’, ‘Step Up’, etc.
This time around, street dancer Carly (Nichola Burley) must try & lead her crew to victory at the UK Street Dance Championships. After losing their rehearsal space, salvation comes in the unlikely shape of ballet schoolmistress Helena (Charlotte Rampling). Impressed by their skill & enthusiasm, she strikes the street dancers a deal: they can practice in the Ballet Academy’s luxurious studio in return for collaborating with her ballet dancers. Eventually the ballet dancers begin to feel a grudging respect for the street dancers’ spectacular moves, & Carly can’t help falling for handsome ballet dancer Tomas (Richard Winsor).
Mike Selwyn, Managing Director of Paramount Pictures Australia said “STREETDANCE 3D is not only hugely enjoyable as a film but also showcases the power of the new 3D technology to enhance films of all types. It really takes the audience into the dance & the relationships & creates a whole new level of entertainment.” Directors Max Giwa & Dania Pasquini have collaborated on many music videos over the past 15 years, with artists as diverse as Girls Aloud, Oasis & Sophie Ellis Bextor. This is their feature film directorial debut.

While STREETDANCE 3D may be the first dance film of its kind to be released, Hollywood isn’t too far behind. The trailer for the third film in the ‘Step Up’ franchise has been unveiled. STEP UP 3D will also utilize 3D technology to bring the dance scenes in the film to the next level.
The film stars Aussie actress, Sharni Vinson (Home & Away) in her breakthrough US role. Produced by Adam Shankman & directed by Jon Chu, ‘Step Up 3D’ is choreographed by Hi Hat – best known for her work with Missy Elliott & the film ‘Bring It On’. Step Up 3D will have a major theatrical release in 36 countries worldwide. The film hits cinemas August 16.
