Melbourne Fringe Festival has long been the city’s playground for fearless creativity — and this year’s program proves once again that dance and movement are at the heart of the celebration. From beaches at sunset to carparks glowing with headlights, the 2025 Open Program transforms unlikely spaces into powerful stages for boundary-breaking dance.
Dance in Extraordinary Places
- The Break – Zoë Bastin Dance
At Williamstown Beach, the tide and ocean sounds become the backdrop for this mesmerising performance. Combining live music with site-specific choreography, The Break explores rhythm, ritual, and the shifting forces of nature against the setting sun. - Strange Chaos – Oozing Future
Known for pushing the boundaries of circus and physical theatre, Oozing Future brings a punk-clown spectacle that blends dance, circus, and raw physicality. Performed in a Northcote carpark under the glare of car headlights, Strange Chaos is fierce, funny, and unforgettably Fringe.
Global Rhythms and Rituals
- Lung Swara – Cahwati Sugiarto with Aviva Endean & Matthias Schack-Arnott
Javanese dancer and singer Cahwati Sugiarto joins acclaimed Australian experimental musicians in an intense, ritual-infused performance at the Abbotsford Convent. Expect a collision of sound, movement, and spirit in this intimate, transcendent work.
Celebrating First Nations Legacies
- Yalinguth Live Music Tour
While centred on music, this immersive experience highlights the movement, rhythm, and embodied storytelling traditions of First Nations culture. Audiences walk along Fitzroy’s Gertrude Street in celebration of the iconic contributions of artists from the 1930s to the 1990s, culminating in a special performance by Amos Roach.
Why Fringe Dance Matters
Melbourne Fringe Creative Director and CEO Simon Abrahams describes the Festival as “the city’s creative playground… democracy in action.” The dance program epitomises this vision — turning beaches, streets, and carparks into vibrant stages, and reminding us that movement is one of the most powerful ways to connect art, audience, and place.
Melbourne Fringe Festival runs 30 September – 19 October, 2025.
