Interview With Paris Cavanagh
One of Australia’s Most Exciting Young Choreographers

We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Paris Cavanagh, one of Australia’s leading young choreographers, to discuss her groundbreaking achievements and exciting future endeavours. Paris, who recently choreographed the Golden Buzzer-winning routine ‘HOPE‘ on America’s Got Talent, is now set to take on the role of Lead Choreographer for the University of Central Florida’s dance team.
Here’s a glimpse into her captivating journey, the inspirations that fuel her creativity, and the ambitious aspirations that drive her forward.
Chris: Can you tell us about the experience of choreographing the ‘HOPE’ routine that earned the Golden Buzzer on America’s Got Talent? How did it feel to see Brent Street make it to the finals? 
Paris Cavanagh: “‘HOPE’ is so special to me. Sitting in the audience, watching us get the Golden Buzzer was a feeling like no other. It took months of hard work not only from me but also from everyone who was part of it. That moment was not just a reflection of the three minutes on stage but all the time, energy, effort, and love that was put into that dance. It all paid off. Truly, a dream come true, and I am so excited for everyone to see what we bring to the live rounds.”
Chris: What inspired you to create the ‘HOPE’ routine, and what message did you aim to convey through this performance?
Paris: “I found the song when it was initially released, and the lyrics really spoke to me and my values as a creative and choreographer, as well as experiences that I have had. It was the power and relatability of these lyrics that inspired my creativity for the dance. I wanted to create a masterpiece that captured the essence of the song.”
Chris: You’re about to embark on an exciting new venture as the Lead Choreographer for the University of Central Florida’s dance team. What are your main goals and visions for this role?
Paris: “I am really excited to be working with the University of Central Florida’s dance team and bringing my style to the other side of the world. I truly want to push each dancer. I think my unique choreographic style will be different from what they are used to, but it will be beneficial in elevating each dancer to the next level. I always love to share my love of creating as a choreographer with eager and hungry dancers. I’m super keen to see what we will be able to create on this new journey.”
Chris: How do you plan to bring your unique style and expertise to the dance team at the University of Central Florida, especially for their events and major competitions?
Paris: “The university has chosen me because of my unique style, so I am really going to lean into this when creating pieces for their events and major competitions. I am really grateful that I have developed such a unique and internationally recognizable style of what I refer to as commercial contemporary. It may not be what the dancers are comfortable with or used to, but I know with time and training, the pieces will be incredible.”
Chris: What excites you the most about working in the USA, and how do you think this experience will impact your career as a choreographer?
Paris: “I am hoping that working in the USA will unlock and open up new doors for me as a creative. America is so central to the creative scene in all aspects, and I hope that working there will expose me to new opportunities to further develop my career as a creative and choreographer. There are so many American artists and artists located in America that it would be a dream to work with, and working more in the USA may be the key that unlocks these opportunities.”
