Queensland Ballet presents Giselle after flood-cancelled Season

Sure to send Brisbane hearts aflutter, Queensland Ballet begins its QPAC season with the Romantic classic Giselle, a year after it was cancelled due to 2022’s historic flooding event.

Audiences will be captivated by one of ballet’s most celebrated works from the Romantic era, with the tale of passion, vengeance, and the power of love.

Queensland Ballet Artistic Director Li Cunxin AO says he is delighted to be bringing Giselle back in 2023.

“So beautiful, so beloved, Giselle is the quintessential Romantic era ballet, holding audiences spellbound since its Parisian première more than 150 years ago,” Mr Li said.

“This gives Brisbane audiences – in particular, those who missed out in 2022 – the chance to finally experience the story of love, betrayal and redemption that this beautiful ballet is renowned for.”

The story follows the life of young peasant, Giselle, who falls madly in love with Duke Albrecht, who courts her in disguise as a peasant. When she finds out Albrecht is engaged to another, Giselle dies of a broken heart. Deep in the moonlit forest, Giselle emerges in the twilight world of the Wilis, who rise from dusk ‘til dawn seeking vengeance among men. Giselle is faced with an impossible decision: will she follow the dark path of revenge or save her true love from certain death?

“We are delighted to be showcasing Ai-Gul’s production of Giselle. Our dancers have been working incredibly hard over the last few months, and are looking forward to finally performing this magnificent production for our Queensland audiences,” said Mr Li.

“There was a strong response to the 2022 Season of Giselle. We have added extra performances to this year’s season to ensure we meet demand. Once again, we’re on track for another sell out season and I’d encourage patrons wishing to catch this celebrated romantic ballet to get in quickly and book before all the seats are snapped up.”

Queensland Ballet’s Giselle runs from 14 – 29 April 2023 at the Playhouse Theatre, Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). For more information, click here.
