Presented as part of the Melbourne Fringe, Planet 21 was a new production from Emotion21 that invited audiences to leave the ordinary behind and step into a world fuelled by creativity, courage, and unfiltered self-expression. It was dance stripped back to its most essential form: the sheer delight of movement.
Rather than following one continuous story, the work unfolded as a series of scenes within a larger universe. Each transported the audience to a new corner of Planet 21—sometimes playful, sometimes emotional, but always full of heart. One moment, we were laughing at the cheeky humour of the performers; the next, we were watching a dancer move with such openness and honesty that the entire room fell silent. Every section was distinct, yet all were connected by the same pulse of joy.
The stage transformed into something cosmic. Costumes glowed and shimmered, the lighting shifted like a starfield, and the dancers moved through it with a sense of wonder that was completely contagious. The illuminated costumes created moments of magic that felt truly otherworldly, while the lighting design amplified this effect, wrapping the dancers in warmth and colour. The audience couldn’t help but smile, cheer, and laugh along as each new scene unfolded.
Amid the fun and playfulness, there were moments of genuine tenderness. A solo sequence danced to music from Wicked stood out as a moving expression of connection and emotion. Here, the movement was softer and slower but no less powerful. You could feel the audience holding their breath, caught in the sincerity of it.
What made this show so special was not polish or perfection but presence. These dancers radiated love for what they did, and that love became the bridge between performer and audience. The result was something that many professional productions strive for but rarely achieve: authentic joy. Every performer on stage danced as if their whole being was saying, “I belong here,” and the audience responded in kind.
Throughout the show, applause and cheers erupted freely. There was laughter, clapping, and even the occasional tear. The energy flowed both ways, feeding back into the performance until the entire room felt united. It was impossible to leave without smiling.
Emotion21’s Planet 21 served as a reminder of why people fall in love with dance in the first place. It was inclusive, uplifting, and unapologetically fun. In this universe, everyone shone, and every movement mattered. Watching it felt like witnessing dance in its purest form—where it wasn’t about steps or technique, but about feeling, freedom, and the joy of simply being.
Planet 21 played as part of the Melbourne Fringe at St Martin’s Irene Mitchell Studio from 16–18 October 2025.
