Rocky Horror Show Dazzles Melbourne Once Again!

Reviewed by Brendan Daynes

On Sunday, February 11th, the iconic Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne once again became the epicentre of excitement and antici-pation as Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show returned to captivate audiences with its unique blend of seduction, humour, and rebellion. Celebrating its enduring legacy, this production masterfully honours the show’s illustrious history while infusing it with a fresh energy that resonates with both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Under the expert direction of Christopher Luscombe, this revival transports audiences into a world of thrilling decadence and unapologetic extravagance. From the moment the lights come up, the stage comes alive with Hugh Durrant’s evocative set design, transporting viewers into the eerie and tantalising realm of Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s mansion, where innocence collides with temptation and convention is thrown out the window.

Jason Donovan shines in the spotlight with his spellbinding interpretation of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, infusing the character with irresistible allure. Donovan’s larger-than-life and commanding stage presence capture the essence of the character with a magnetic charm that draws the audience into his seductive world. From his sassy one-liners to his powerhouse vocals, Donovan effortlessly embodies the iconic role, making an unforgettable impression on the performance.

Joel Creasey, known primarily as a comedian, steps into the role of the Narrator with the ease of Cinderella slipping into her glass slipper, beaming as he guides the audience through the twisted tale with wit, charm, and comedic brilliance. His delivery is sharp and engaging, keeping viewers captivated from start to finish. Creasey’s comedic timing is impeccable, eliciting laughter with every quip and his presence on stage adds an extra layer of entertainment to the proceedings, enhancing the interactive nature of the Rocky Horror experience.

Joined by an exceptionally talented cast, each member brings their own unique flair to their respective roles, enriching the production with their individual talents. Blake Bowden’s portrayal showcases a perfect balance of innocence and vulnerability, conveying Brad’s wide-eyed wonder and gradual awakening with sincerity and authenticity. Deirdre Khoo shines as Janet, capturing the transformation from naïve ingenue to confident and empowered woman with grace and subtlety. Ellis Dolan delivers a memorable dual performance as Eddie and Dr. Scott. His versatility shines in both roles; his portrayal of Eddie exudes energy and electrifies the stage, while his interpretation of Dr. Scott is charmingly eccentric. Darcey Eagle dazzles as Columbia, her vibrant energy and electrifying dance moves lighting up the stage with every appearance. Stellar Perry, in the dual role of Magenta and The Usherette, is a standout. Her sultry vocals and enchanting presence adding an extra layer of intrigue to the proceedings. Henry Rollo is commanding as Riff Raff, with his standout vocals serving as a highlight of the performance. His rich and resonant voice fills the theatre with an electrifying energy, captivating audiences with each note. His portrayal is both captivating and unsettling, effortlessly embodying Riff Raff’s enigmatic persona with a commanding stage presence and impeccable vocal control. The introduction of Daniel Erbacher as Rocky injects a fresh burst of energy into the show, his powerful performance and undeniable stage presence electrifying the audience from start to finish. With his chiseled physique and boundless charisma, Erbacher embodies the epitome of male perfection, captivating viewers with every flex and movement. The ensemble of phantoms, played by Josh Gates, Hollie Hames, Nicolas Van Litsenborgh, and Erica Wild, as well as Swings Seryan Burke-Low, and Keane Shepperd-Fletcher, adds an extra layer of depth and mystery to the production with their synchronised movements and haunting presence. The dedication and talent exhibited on stage make for an immersive and captivating evening of theatre.

Nathan M Wright’s choreography is a highlight, with each dance number executed with precision and flair by the talented cast. From the iconic “Time Warp” to the sensual “Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch Me,” the choreography adds an extra layer of excitement to the show, inviting audience members to join in the fun and let loose.

The audience’s reception is nothing short of ecstatic, with cheers, laughter, and enthusiastic participation echoing throughout the theatre. Creasey’s adept handling of hecklers adds an extra layer of entertainment to the proceedings, further enhancing the interactive nature of the Rocky Horror experience.

Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show continues to enchant and enthral audiences with its timeless appeal. With a cast and crew who deliver performances that are nothing short of spectacular, this production reaffirms its status as a cult classic that can be enjoyed time and time again.

Rocky Horror Show is currently playing at the Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne and will continue to captivate audiences in Sydney from 31 March 2024. To purchase tickets or learn more about the show, please visit https://rockyhorror.com.au/.
