Sydney Dance Company Opens 2020 Season with Big Name Pemieres

Bonachela / Forsythe presents Impermanence, N.N.N.N. & E2 7SD

Sydney Dance Company begins a thrilling 2020 with an exciting triple bill featuring breathtakingly innovative works from across the spectrum of physicality from Rafael Bonachela and William Forsythe.

New work Impermanence sees Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela join forces with Bryce Dessner  of iconic American rock band The National, who will compose a score to be performed live on stage each night by the renowned Australian String Quartet. This electrifying world premiere explores the ephemeral nature of all things. Dessner’s score has been co-commissioned by Sydney Dance Company and the Australian String Quartet who last worked together on Bonachela’s Frame of Mind in 2018.

On Dessner, Rafael Bonachela said, “It’s been a dream to work with Bryce Dessner, an amazing contemporary classical composer whose work has been heard in Oscar nominated films The Revenant and The Two Popes, on this exciting new piece. To have his score performed live on stage by the Australian String Quartet will be incredible for both our audience and the dancers, and I’m excited for everyone to experience it. There is nothing more powerful than dance performed to live music.”

In an Australian premiere and major coup, Sydney Dance Company will perform William Forsythe’s dynamic and rhythmic N.N.N.N., making the Company only the sixth dance company in the world to be permitted to perform this work!

On Forsythe, Bonachela said, “Our relationship with Forsythe began in 2015 after we were the first company in Australia to be granted the right to perform his seminal work Quintett. The trust Forsythe showed in Sydney Dance Company has grown since then and we are delighted to continue our relationship with this extraordinary choreographer in 2020.”

Audiences will also be witness to the work that put Bonachela on the map after it won the prestigious Place Prize in the UK, E2 7SD. This virtuosic fast-paced duet will be performed by Sydney Dance Company for the first time.

On E2 7SD, Bonachela said, “E2 7SD represents a big step in my career; its success in the UK propelled me towards becoming Artistic Director of Sydney Dance Company. It has never been seen in Australia before and I can’t wait to share it with Australian audiences for the first time.”

★★★★ “Forsythe’s fascinatingly oddball composition” – The Guardian (N.N.N.N.)
★★★★ “An intensely physical and emotional duet… there is challenge, aggression, love and despair” – Culture Whispers (E2 7SD)
