Adelaide Festival Centre

Contemporary dance, visual art and sound come together in BÁRBAROS, an evocative stage production that explores the rivalry between human instincts and the restraints of society this June at Adelaide Festival Centre’s Space Theatre. Tickets on sale now.

Award-winning choreographer Lina Limosani, renowned Adelaide visual artist Thom Buchanan and #1 New York Times bestselling author Sean Williams have joined forces to create a dance, movement and theatre work that explores the journey into what it is to be human.

Through dynamic physical performance by Bangarra Dance Theatre alumni Anton and Adelaide born dancer Rowan Rossi, a haunting original score, and a powerful stage design, audiences will be transported to a world where cultured societies perform barbaric acts.

BÁRBAROS Choreographer and Director Lina Limosani: “BÁRBAROS has been a two-year multi-artform collaboration that from the onset was poised to be presented on the main stage in Adelaide. The spontaneity and satisfaction that has come from the interplay between the team’s shared goals and individual contributions has been an exquisite journey of discovery for everyone.

“This season is a result of our creativity, commitment and hard work and we are extremely grateful to be premiering this landmark new work created by a team of distinguished independent South Australian artists.”

BÁRBAROS has been developed through Adelaide Festival Centre’s inSPACE Development Program. inSPACE provides support, encouragement and invaluable feedback to South Australian independent artists, with works-in-progress shown to an invited audience of arts critics, industry experts and members of the public at Adelaide Festival Centre’s Drama Centre Rehearsal Room.

Adelaide Festival Centre Programming Executive Callan Fleming: “inSPACE is incredibly proud of the success of BÁRBAROS. It’s been wonderful to see everyone support the Multi Arts collaboration on this project to platform performance that is created by South Australian artists. inSPACE has a long history of supporting South Australian voices and we are excited to see this work of art come to life.”

Applications are now open for the 2023 season of inSPACE, inSPACE Writers Room, inSPACE x Feast Festival and inSPACE x FirstSPACE. Information about applying can be found here.

Over the past 20 years, inSPACE has proudly worked with representatives across South Australia’s flourishing independent arts scene with organisations such as Vitalstatistix, Slingsby and Brink. Alumni include Erin Fowler, Tilda Cobham-Hervey and Finegan Kruckemeyer.
