THE 10 MINUTE DANCE EXPLOSION

THE 10 MINUTE DANCE EXPLOSIONThe search is now over and we have found Melbourne’s top and up coming choreographers and dancers as well as the cities best inde-pendent dance companies. That’s right Short+Sweet Dance is back and on the attack, the festival which kicked off last year, is return-ing to Chapel Off Chapel in 2010. This year’s festival will see over 100 dancers hit the stage in what will be the biggest dance festival Melbourne has ever seen.
With two weeks of performances and more opportunities for dancers and choreographers to strut their stuff this years festival is set to be bigger and better than ever, festival director Alister Smith said “We were searching for every style. Jazz, Tap, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Physical theatre, Burlesque basically if you could dance it we wanted to see it. We want the best of the best. Push the boundaries be creative, be original, be under 10 minutes in length and you’re in!”
MELBOURNE’S BIGGEST DANCE FESTIVAL IS BACK!!
This years festival highlights include:
Stephen Agisilaou, after winning the highly distinguished award of Best Choreography in 2009 with his brand new contemporary jazz company Vertical Shadows, Stephen went on to feature as a choreographer on So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) 2010. This year Stephen is back with another heart stopping piece featuring his very unique contemporary style entitled HOME.
Collaboration: The Project is also returning in 2010 with Paul Malek’s incredible choreography producing another outstanding piece telling a hunting tale of a soul-feeding spirit lurking in limbo. This Gothic Tale is terrifyingly beautiful. Paul is another 2009 SS+D choreog-rapher who featured as a choreographer on SYTYCD 2010
Hollaback Melbourne’s leading all female hip hop crew will be busting out some of their trade mark choreography. This highly acclaimed crew will be poppin’ and lockin’ to their very own beats re-mixed by DJ RJ
International Choreographer Adam Parson (Los Angeles) has choreographed an amazing piece featuring the dance talents of The Space full time students. Exploring the idea of man returning to mother earth, Kalahari Sunrise looks at a more primal time where man is more connected and grounded to earth.
Melbourne Dance Theatre will rip up the floor in a high energy Jazz routine by acclaimed choreographer Jason Law.
Caroline Meaden and Alice Dixon bring us a stunning contemporary piece inspired by the Australian Play, Summer of the Seventeenth Doll. Set in a small Carlton terrace house the ladies explore the mental and physical reactions of anxiety, frustration and tension felt by women of the 1950’s due to the social restraints and restrictions of the time.
Nadia Tornese (Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance) shows us a slamming hip-hop fusion piece inspired by the idea of addiction and its effect on the youth today.
These are just a few of the amazing pieces and ideas that the 2010 festival will showcase, with this year is set to be bigger and better! Performers come from all over Melbourne’s dance world and promise energy and passion to burn!
Short+Sweet Dance comes with a sensational pedigree:
Its first three seasons in Sydney set pulses racing and brought together some of the finest dancers and choreographers in the country – many of them well-known from reality TV hits “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance”. With last years inaugural Melbourne effort also being a huge success, this year is set to top it once again with new and invigorating ideas already bouncing in from local dancers.
Alister Smith (Festival Director): “Short + Sweet is taking over the world, ten minutes at a time, It’s a kick-ass art-form that’s simply irresistible. I can’t wait to bring Melbourne this years explosion of dance.”
