Award-winning choreographer Aakash Odedra returns to Australia with the internationally acclaimed Songs of the Bulbul, premiering at Arts Centre Melbourne’s Playhouse from 3–7 February 2026. Fresh from its Best Show Award win at the Edinburgh International Festival, this solo masterpiece weaves together the virtuosity of Kathak, the poetry of Sufi mythology, and the emotional force of a deeply human story.
At the heart of Songs of the Bulbul is a poignant Sufi tale of a nightingale held in captivity. Odedra uses the bird’s final, exquisitely sung lament as a metaphor for life’s fleeting beauty and the soul’s longing for freedom. With each movement, he explores the tension between confinement and transcendence—asking whether we, too, remain bound by the material world or rise toward spiritual release.
Developed with choreographer Rani Khanam and composer Rushil Ranjan, the work blends Ranjan’s new score with the rhythmic complexity of Kathak, Persian poetic traditions, and the meditative arc of Sufism. The result is an ambitious, emotionally charged performance that feels both ferocious and tender—an offering of physical precision and spiritual depth.
Since its debut, Songs of the Bulbul has captivated audiences worldwide. Critics at the Edinburgh International Festival hailed it as “a mesmerising tour de force” and “a profound exploration of freedom and the human spirit,” while UK reviewers praised the production’s aesthetic beauty and emotional resonance.
Founded in Leicester in 2011, the Aakash Odedra Company is internationally renowned for blending classical Indian dance forms with contemporary movement through a British Asian lens. Odedra, a Bessie Award-winning artist, last appeared on Arts Centre Melbourne’s stages in the world premiere of Samsara for Asia TOPA 2020, and the company returned in 2023 with the celebrated youth-focused work Little Murmur.
Following its Melbourne season, Songs of the Bulbul travels to Perth Festival from 13–15 February 2026. The Australian tour is presented by Far & Away Productions, with support from Manchester Camerata, Jacob’s Pillow, Arts Council England, and the British Council.
