It’s been more than 20 years since Melbourne last saw the phenomenon that is HAIR the Musical — and now the Grammy and Tony Award-winning hit is set to return in a bold new production at the Athenaeum Theatre from 25 October 2025.
Created by Gerome Ragni and James Rado (book and lyrics) with music by Galt MacDermot, HAIR exploded onto the stage in the late 1960s and became an anthem for a generation. With iconic hits like Aquarius, Good Morning Starshine, Let the Sunshine In, and the title track Hair, the show captured the spirit of counterculture, peace, and youthful rebellion.
Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, HAIR tells the story of free-spirited young hippies who challenge authority, explore identity, and fight for love and freedom in a divided society. Its themes of alienation, civil disobedience, and hope remain just as relevant today.
Director Glenn Elston says: “Revisiting HAIR reminds me how fearless this show was back then and how much it still matters today. I’m excited to bring it back for those who know and love it — and to introduce it to a whole new generation.”
The new production will feature direction by Glenn Elston, choreography by Sue-Ellen Shook, and musical direction from Paul Norton, with further casting announcements to come.
Tickets are now on sale at hairthemusical.com.au.
