Legally Blonde The Musical

The National Theatre, From July 12

Melbourne’s independent musical theatre group Theatrical Inc. have announced their latest production, the smash hit show LEGALLY BLONDE: The Musical which is set to open for a limited season at The National Theatre in St Kilda from July 12th, 2025. Based on the beloved hit film Legally Blonde, this fabulously fun award-winning musical follows the journey of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, defies expectations, and proves that being true to yourself never goes out of style! Elle Woods appears to have it all, however her glossy life is turned upside down when her boyfriend Warner dumps her so he can find a more suitable partner while he attends Harvard Law. Determined to get him back, Elle ingeniously charms her way into the prestigious law school. While there, she struggles with peers, professors and her ex. With the support of some new friends, Elle quickly realises her own potential and sets out to prove herself to the world. This timeless show saw its original Broadway production earn seven Tony Award nominations, including Best Original Score. The West End production won three Laurence Olivier Awards in 2011, including Best New Musical. Additionally, an Australian production of the musical won five Helpmann Awards in 2013.

Executive Producer, Andrew Gyopar said, “Legally Blonde is a celebration of confidence, courage and discovering who you really are. It’s clever, funny and full of heart and I can’t wait for Melbourne to fall in love with this production and the incredible new talent we’re so proud to introduce to the stage.”

The production marks an exciting debut for Tasmanian, Emily McDougall, who is taking on the leading role of Elle Woods. Emily is joined by a dynamic cast that brings together fresh faces and seasoned performers, highlighting some of Melbourne’s finest emerging talent. From familiar favourites who have previously lit up the Theatrical Inc stage, to newcomers making their first appearance, this ensemble is set to deliver a must-see production brimming with wit, charm, and dazzling performances.

LEGALLY BLONDE: The Musical will play at The National Theatre in St Kilda from Wednesday to Sunday from July 12th 2025. This vibrant production is a must-see for fans of Legally Blonde and newcomers alike. The powerful messages from the show and film have stood the test of time and elevated the character of Elle Woods to a celebrated feminist icon who defies traditional stereotypes of women – as she rises to the challenges placed in front of her. Elle fearlessly demonstrates that femininity and intelligence can coexist, and that women don’t need to sacrifice their identities to succeed.
