Melbourne City Ballet interprets Classic Wizard of Oz

Visits Tasmania for the first time

Next in its busy 2017 season, the Melbourne City Ballet will recreate the cherished story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz for audiences in Melbourne and Tasmania. The dancers will click their heels together and get a little bit wicked as they follow the classic tale of Dorothy Gale, a young country girl who is swept away to the magical world of Oz.

Full of enchanting characters, some friendly and some truly wicked! The Wonderful Wizard of Oz will be imaginatively brought to life in this brand new ballet for Melbourne City Ballet. With stunning new sets and costumes and the company’s largest ensemble to date, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is Melbourne City Ballet’s most extravagant production for 2017.

“I envisioned the ballet to be stylistically exaggerated with dynamic choreography and vibrant sets and costumes” says Artistic Director, Michael Pappalardo. “Melbourne City Ballet has seen so much growth in the past 12 months and with this growth the demands on what the Company delivers has grown, I felt the timing was right to take on this big, bold ballet so that audiences walk away thinking Wow!” he continues.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz will open in Melbourne on 6 October for limited performances at Plenty Ranges Arts & Convention Centre and Darebin Arts and Entertainment Centre and then, thanks to the generous support of Spirit of Tasmania, the Company will cross Bass Straight for the first time to captivate audiences in Tasmania.
