Murder For Two

Who Done It? Who Knows? But You’ll Be Laughing Too Hard to Care in Murder for Two!

Reviewed by Brendan Daynes

Murder for Two is a whirlwind musical comedy that is as much about the music and the laughs as it is about solving a gripping murder mystery. With a book and lyrics by Kellen Blair and music by Joe Kinosian, this production is a masterclass in ingenuity and performance. Directed by Richard Carroll, this latest rendition performed by Gabbi Bolt and Maverick Newman, is a 90-minute spectacle that showcases the immense talent of its two stars.

Set in the chaotic aftermath of a murder, the plot follows ambitious Officer Marcus Moscowicz, a small-town policeman who dreams of becoming a detective. His chance arrives when famed American novelist Arthur Whitney is mysteriously shot at his own birthday party.. Eager to showcase his investigative prowess, Moscowicz takes charge, determined to uncover the killer and earn his stripes as a detective. What follows is a riotous musical adventure filled with unexpected twists and turns. As Moscowicz pieces together clues, he must navigate a whirlwind of eccentric suspects. From prima ballerinas with dubious alibis to psychiatrists with hidden motives, each suspect adds layers of intrigue and comedy to the story.

Gabbi Bolt is a revelation in her role as Officer Moscowicz, bringing a delightful blend of sharp comedic timing and earnest determination to her portrayal. Her performance is not just about her acting; it also showcases her exceptional musical talent. The role demands a high level of musicianship, and she rises to the occasion, expertly playing the onstage piano while remaining fully in character. Her ability to deliver complex piano pieces without missing a beat, all while keeping the audience engrossed in her character’s investigative journey, is truly impressive. Bolt’s performance strikes a perfect balance between humour and heart, with her portrayal adding depth and charm.

Maverick Newman’s performance is a masterclass in versatility and comedic timing. As he embodies the range of eccentric suspects—from Whitney’s glamorous wife to a hilariously over-the-top prima ballerina and a suspiciously cheerful psychiatrist—Newman effortlessly shifts between characters with remarkable precision. Each role is brought to life with distinct mannerisms, voices, and quirks, making it easy for the audience to forget that one actor is playing them all. His seamless transitions and ability to fully commit to each persona showcase his immense talent and sharp comedic instincts, making his performance truly unforgettable.

The set, designed by Keerthi Subramanyam, plays a crucial role in the storytelling. It is more than just a backdrop; it is a living part of the show. The attention to detail in the set design, combined with Priyanka Martin’s dynamic lighting, creates an atmosphere that is both immersive and visually captivating. The choreography by Shannon Burns adds another layer of dynamism to the show. The movement around the set is fluid and purposeful, enhancing the comedic elements while maintaining the pace of the story.

Humour is at the heart of the narrative, and the jokes come thick and fast with a rapid-fire delivery that keeps the audience in stitches from start to finish. The comedy is smart, drawing on classic farce while also infusing modern sensibilities, making it accessible to a wide range of audiences. The collaborative efforts of the cast and crew, under the expert guidance of musical supervisor Damon Wade and sound designer Daniel Herten, ensure that every moment lands perfectly, both musically and comedically.

Murder for Two is a must-see production that showcases the exceptional talents of Gabbi Bolt and Maverick Newman. It is a unique blend of mystery, music, and comedy that keeps the audience guessing and laughing until the final curtain call. With its innovative direction, stunning set, and pitch-perfect performances, this production brilliantly showcases the vibrant creativity and dynamic energy of the Australian theatre scene.
