When The Night Comes

Captivating and Enigmatic: An Experience That Will Indulge Your Senses

Reviewed by Brendan Daynes

When The Night Comes invites you on an immersive journey into a world of hedonistic delights and intoxicating sensations. Produced by the innovative team at Broad Encounters, this production seamlessly blends drama, interactive elements, and a multi-sensory experience that leaves the audience spellbound.

From the moment the first door opens, guests are transported into a dark, decadent, and delicious soirée, where curiosity and intrigue take centre stage. The evening is masterfully designed to keep audiences in a state of wonder, never quite sure what to expect next. This unpredictability is one of the show’s greatest strengths, ensuring that every twist and turn feels fresh and exhilarating.

The plot, while nonlinear and abstract, revolves around an exclusive invitation to join The Society. As guests are guided from room to room, they encounter a series of tantalising provocations and celestial characters, each adding a layer of depth to the excessively indulgent world they inhabit. The narrative, though fragmented, is coherent enough to follow while leaving plenty of space for personal interpretation and engagement.

The cast delivers outstanding performances, with each member embodying their roles with incredible commitment and finesse. Jeremy Lloyd is both charming and unsettling, perfectly setting the tone for the evening. Meg Hickey captivates with her ethereal presence, effortlessly embodying a character that seems to float between reality and fantasy. Gina Tay Limpus illuminates the space with a mesmerising aura, beckoning the audience further into the enigmatic depths of The Society. Kristian Šantić’s performance casts a provocative spell, weaving intricate threads of intrigue that enrich the production’s allure. Elizabeth Dawson-Smith’s nuanced portrayal reveals layers of mystery, adding a compelling dimension to the unfolding narrative.

The performers’ remarkable talent for responding to the audience’s reactions and active participation injects a vibrant energy into the performance, ensuring that each moment feels spontaneous and alive. This interactive approach goes beyond the confines of traditional theatre, fostering a direct and intimate connection between the actors and the audience. By breaking down these conventional barriers, the production creates a space where spectators feel not only immersed but also actively involved in shaping the unfolding narrative. This mutual exchange of energy and emotion heightens the authenticity of the experience, forging a profound and memorable connection that resonates deeply with everyone in attendance.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this experience is the production design. The Austral theatre has undergone a stunning transformation, where each meticulously crafted room offers a unique atmosphere that immerses the audience in an interactive experience like no other. From the opulent parlours to the shadowy alcoves, every detail is designed to engage the senses and transport the audience into another world. The costumes and props are equally impressive, adding a tactile richness to the experience that makes it feel genuinely bespoke.

The integration of cocktails and edible treats into the performance is a masterful stroke of creativity, elevating the multi-sensory experience to new heights. Far from being mere additions, these elements are seamlessly woven into the fabric of the narrative and become a part of the storytelling, enhancing the mood and atmosphere of each scene. This thoughtful integration invites spectators to engage with all their senses, blurring the line between observer and participant. It’s an experience where every sensory detail contributes to the overall ambiance, ensuring that each moment is as unforgettable as it is immersive.

When The Night Comes is more than just a show; it is an unforgettable experience. Through meticulous curation of sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures, Broad Encounters have created a journey that resonates long after you’ve immersed yourself in the enigmatic world of The Society. This intimate journey through multiple rooms ensures that each guest feels essential to the unfolding narrative. This personal connection, combined with outstanding performances and innovative design, sets a new standard in immersive theatre.

When The Night Comes is being presented in Melbourne this winter until August 3rd with a strictly limited nightly capacity.
