Reviewed by Brendan Daynes

In the vast and ever-evolving world of modern musical theatre, where numerous productions vie for attention, Wicked remains a timeless classic. Since its debut on Broadway over twenty years ago, this production has captivated audiences worldwide, firmly establishing itself as one of the most cherished musicals of all time, and stands tall as a symbol of creativity and innovation.

The collective efforts of producers Marc Platt, David Stone, Universal Stage Productions, The Araca Group, Jon B Platt, and Crossroads Live Australia have once again, brought this story to life with unparalleled creativity and dedication, contributing to its status as a theatrical phenomenon. Its enduring popularity can be attributed not only to its captivating story and unforgettable characters but also to its universal themes of friendship, acceptance, and the power of redemption.

At its core, the narrative explores the complexities of human nature and the journey towards self-discovery. Through the lens of the Land of Oz, the audience is invited to explore the age-old question of good versus evil and to challenge their perceptions of right and wrong. The character of Elphaba, in particular, serves as a powerful symbol of defiance and resilience, defying society’s expectations and embracing her uniqueness with unwavering courage. Her journey from outcast to hero underscores the strength of the human spirit, reminding us that true beauty lies not in appearances, but in the kindness and compassion we show to others.

The success of this particular production is undeniably owed to its talented cast and creative team, who work tirelessly to breathe life into the enchanting world of Oz. From Eugene Lee’s meticulously crafted sets to Susan Hilferty’s breathtaking costumes, every aspect of the production speaks volumes about the dedication and artistry of those behind the scenes. Kenneth Posner’s evocative lighting design sets the mood and tone, while Tony Meola’s masterful sound design transports the audience right into the mystical Land of Oz. Under the expert direction of Lisa Leguillou and with musical staging by Stephen Oremus, the production seamlessly integrates music, dance, and storytelling to create an immersive theatrical experience.

The choreography in this production is completely mesmerising. Wayne Cilento’s expertly crafted movements bring a contemporary flair to the stage, infusing each dance number with energy, emotion, and precision. Each dancer moves with fluidity and strength, effortlessly embodying the essence of their characters and breathing life into the fantastical world of Oz. Whether it’s the exhilarating dance sequences set against the backdrop of the Emerald City’s grandeur or the poignant moments of introspection, Cilento’s choreography shines as a standout feature of the production, enrapturing audiences and leaving them utterly spellbound.

The leading cast members deliver exceptional performances that truly shine on stage. Courtney Monsma brings delightful charm and charisma to Glinda, seamlessly transitioning from bubbly socialite to compassionate friend. Her refreshing interpretation infuses the role with unique humour, wit, and sincerity, captivating audiences with impeccable comedic timing. In the role of Elphaba, Sheridan Adams delivers a commanding performance, captivating the audience with her powerful vocals and infusing the misunderstood green witch with depth and vulnerability. Their on-stage chemistry adds authenticity to the complex and evolving relationship between their characters. Robyn Nevin’s portrayal of Madame Morrible is equally impressive, bringing a perfect balance of cunning and charisma to the role. Simon Burke captivates as the enigmatic Wizard, Liam Head shines as the charismatic Fiyero, while Kurtis Papdinis adds depth to Boq with subtle nuance. Additionally, Shewit Belay and Adam Murphy deliver compelling performances as Nessarose and Doctor Dillamond respectively. Together, these talented actors, along with those in the ensemble, deliver a performance that is nothing short of captivating, bringing the beloved characters of Oz to vibrant life with passion and precision.

Wicked is more than just a musical – it’s a cultural phenomenon that continues to captivate audiences around the world.
