An electrifying reimagining of one of the most iconic stories in pop culture history is set to light up Melbourne this summer, as SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER struts into the Athenaeum Theatre from 8–25 January 2026.
Led by award-winning triple threat Ethan Churchill, this bold new production by Drew Anthony Creative breathes fresh life into the 1977 cult classic that defined a generation through music, movement and unmistakable disco swagger.
A breakout star returns to the dancefloor
Following his acclaimed turn in the 2024 Perth season — which earned him the BroadwayWorld Australia Award for Best Performer — Ethan Churchill reprises the role of Tony Manero, the enigmatic Brooklyn teen who rules the disco floor while grappling with life beyond it.
Churchill brings intensity, vulnerability and explosive physicality to the role, anchoring a production that leans into both the raw humanity and kinetic energy of the original film.
Opposite him is rising star Regan Barber as Stephanie Mangano, whose partnership with Tony becomes the emotional spine of the story — a meeting of ambition, escape and hard-earned self-awareness.
A powerhouse Australian cast
The production boasts a formidable ensemble of Australian performers, blending established talent with exciting emerging voices. Izzi Green shines as Annette, while Australian musical theatre favourite Chelsea Plumley brings depth and grit to Flo Manero, alongside comedy icon George Kapiniaris as the formidable Frank Manero.
The cast is rounded out by Matthew Casamento as Frank Jnr, child performers Amileya Moro and Charis Morabito sharing the role of Linda Manero, and a dynamic group of performers portraying Tony’s tight-knit circle and the pulsating disco world that defines them.
More than disco — a story of escape and identity
While SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER is synonymous with glittering dance floors and the unmistakable music of the Bee Gees, this production leans into the deeper themes that made the story resonate across decades.
Set against the social tensions of 1970s Brooklyn, the musical explores working-class identity, aspiration, masculinity and the desire for something more, as Tony uses dance as both refuge and rebellion.
Director Drew Anthony honours the grit of the original film while elevating the theatrical experience through high-impact choreography, striking costumes and a state-of-the-art digital set that vividly recreates the film’s most recognisable locations.
A creative team steeped in excellence
With choreography by Jamie & Suzi Rolton and musical direction by Daniel Puckey, this reimagined SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER delivers the full emotional punch of the story alongside the explosive dance sequences audiences expect — and more.
The production’s Perth debut proved a critical and commercial success, taking home BroadwayWorld Australia Awards for Best Direction, Best Scenic Design and Best Performer, cementing this revival as one of the most anticipated musical theatre events of the summer.
Disco lives on
More than four decades after its cinematic debut, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER continues to captivate — not just as a celebration of disco, but as a story of youth, longing and the courage to imagine a different future.
This Melbourne season promises to be bold, visceral and unmissable.
