Embracing The Void

The Joymaker: Article Four

Author Christine Denny

Hello again and welcome back to The Joy Maker!

By now, I am trusting that you have read a few of my articles and are happily navigating the world of “ Conscious Joyfulness” as I like to call it. Implementing into your life those tips and ideas that have been resonating with you through this column.

And today I wanted to turn your attention to the beauty of finding yourself “ in the void”!

So I shall start by asking you a few simple questions?

  1. Have you ever felt like you are in some sort of weird holding pattern in your life?
  2. Have you ever felt like you are in some sort of void and nothing is happening?
  3. Have you ever felt a sense of boredom and nothingness surround you?
  4. Have you ever felt like you are stuck – not moving anywhere, not getting anywhere, and feeling a little lost?

Perhaps your interests have changed, your job is no longer fun, your friends seem to be on a different wave -length to you and there seems to be a whole lot of nothingness swimming about you?

What if I told you that those moments in the void can actually be the most exciting and reinvigorating times in your life?

What if I told you that these moments of nothingness can actually be the moments of everything?

What if it turns out that the void is necessary for you to become who you are meant to be?

Now for me – very much the action taker – stopping and relaxing into this void is quite the challenge. I constantly feel like if I am not doing something, then nothing can happen. I mean, we are conditioned to “work work work” and make it happen. And of course – I do not advocate sitting about doing nothing and thinking that the world of your dreams will land in your lap. You clearly need to take some sort of action to get anything moving and happening.

However – like all things in life, there is a balance.

A balance of preparation and doing – and then the balance of being and allowing.

That is right everyone. We need to be able to sit back and lean into the void, to allow it to come to us so to speak.

Whilst the action-packed moments of doing are so incredibly important, so are the moments of being. Of falling effortlessly into the void of nothingness.

Why?

Because the void holds the promise of possibility.

The void is the place where there is space for the Universe to provide and steer you on another course.

The void is where you can experience endless possibilities.

Put simply – the void is important – as then the Universe can fill it up for you

To explain this in a simpler way – if you have a diary that is full to the brim with appointments and you are scheduled for every moment of your day, how can The Universe provide? How can anything change? How can anything new emerge?

There are no gaps.

There are no windows of opportunity.

There is no time.

There is nothing to fill.

It is like you are actively saying to The Universe: “Sorry buddy, but I have other plans and do not have any time for anything other than what I have on my scheduled calendar. You may have planned some other options – but sorry. I like things as they are. No time for that.”

So, you can see how limiting this framework can be.

This constant doing, could actually end up being your constant undoing and stonewalling of The Universe.

Relaxing into this void may actually be the huge invitation The Universe is waiting for, to come along and fill you up with new and exciting opportunities and ideas.

Opportunities that you would not have been able to take, had you been struggling to fill the void with other stuff.

Ideas that may not have occurred to you had you been such a busy bee elsewhere all the time.

So, in a nutshell, I guess what I am saying today, for my benefit as much as yours, is to relax.

Let the void be your friend.

Allow time for ideas to reveal themselves to you and flourish.

Do not panic if you find yourself with a little more “free time” than usual.

Hold its hand and skip merrily down the path of mystery and intrigue.

Let the void provide you with time to relax, reset and reimagine the life you have created for yourself.

Entertain the possibility, that if there is a void in your life at the moment, perhaps it has presented itself, so this space can be refilled with something else?

Something new and exciting.

Something unexpected.

Something you may never have thought of.

So resist the temptation to fill the void yourself with meaningless waffle and activity.

For sure – if you feel truly inspired to do something – then do it.

And, of course, you need to meet all your responsibilities and commitments and make sure you can pay your bills. But resist the urge to do things just for the sake of it. To literally fill the time. As then you could be blocking and needlessly filling, the very channels that The Universe is waiting to use to communicate to you.

You need space around you for new things to happen.

You need emptiness for new growth to flourish.

You need silence for inspiration to be heard.

So – relax into the void.

Embrace the void.

Nurture the void.

And know that if you are currently sitting in the void, then you are most likely heading for some new and exciting changes in your life, and that you have beside you, in this moment, the best friend in the world.

Stop – Relax – Breathe!

And Just Be!

And allow the void to rise up to meet you.

Discover Your Joy
