The smash-hit Broadway musical Waitress is officially coming to Melbourne in 2026, bringing Sara Bareilles’ uplifting score and a beloved story of resilience, friendship, and second chances to Her Majesty’s Theatre. Producer John Frost for Crossroads Live announced that the Melbourne season will open in May, ahead of a Sydney run at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in August.

Based on Adrienne Shelly’s much-loved film, Waitress is celebrated for its humanity, humour, and heart. A groundbreaking female-led creative team powers the musical: a book by Jessie Nelson, choreography by Lorin Latarro, direction by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus, and an unforgettable score by Grammy Award winner Sara Bareilles, featuring hits such as Love Song and Brave.

Bareilles shared her excitement about the Australian premiere, calling the show “universal and timely,” with themes of courage, hope, and learning to love oneself. Having won audiences across Broadway, the West End, the U.S., and beyond, Waitress has become a global success, earning multiple Tony and Drama Desk nominations during its celebrated run.

At the centre of Waitress is Jenna, a small-town waitress and gifted pie maker whose longing for a new beginning sets her on an unexpected journey. When a baking competition, a new romance, and the steadfast support of her fellow waitresses open a door toward change, Jenna discovers that the recipe for happiness might be simpler—and closer—than she imagined.

Producer John Frost describes the production as “original, inspiring and made from the finest ingredients,” noting the musical’s global acclaim and enduring emotional resonance. Critics around the world have praised Waitress as “sweet, sassy, passionate & delightful” (New York Magazine) and “a glorious reminder that life is messy and wondrous” (The Washington Post).

Since its 2016 Broadway debut, Waitress has carved out a place as a feel-good favourite of modern musical theatre, playing nearly four years on Broadway, returning for an encore season, and touring internationally. Its Australian premiere marks a long-awaited moment for the show’s passionate fanbase—and an exciting milestone for local musical theatre lovers.

Whether you adore the original film, have fallen in love with Bareilles’ music, or are craving a feel-good musical that celebrates courage and community, Waitress is set to be one of 2026’s most anticipated arts events.
